Hunter × Hunter is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi. It has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since March 3, 1998. Hunter × Hunter has been a huge critical and commercial success, even surpassing Togashi’s previous work, Yu Yu Hakusho.
Due to the manga’s popularity, Hunter × Hunter was adapted into a 62-episode anime television series which ran until 2001. Various Hunter x Hunter original video animations (OVAs) were subsequently released in Japan from 2002 to 2004. The anime series enjoyed much more modest popularity than its manga source. This is why the first anime series was cut short, as it did not perform as well as its manga counterpart.
A new Hunter × Hunter anime adaptation was announced in 2011. Instead of continuing the story from where the previous anime series left off, it restarts the story from the beginning of the manga in an attempt to adapt it more accurately. Hunter x Hunter (2011) ran for a total of 148 episodes, ending in 2014. The new anime series was met with near universal critical acclaim, yet the anime was left unfinished. Why did Hunter x Hunter (2011) stop airing even though it was a big hit?
The answer has to do more with the manga than the anime itself. The anime series started catching up to its manga source. To make things worst, the manga had gone into hiatus. The publication history of the Hunter × Hunter manga has been plagued with hiatuses. The anime series had no choice but to end because it didn’t have enough source material. Togashi has been continuously battling back pain, which could explain the sudden and continuous breaks.
Many fans are wondering if Hunter x Hunter will ever return for a new season. Although no official announcements have been made yet, it’s very likely that we will see the anime resume at some point. The anime series and manga have both been a commercial success, which makes it easier for studios to come to their decision.
